Trials in South Yorkshire to bring Full Fibre to rural communities
New trials are taking place in South Yorkshire to bring faster internet to those in rural areas by running fibre cables through water pipes.
The new government backed scheme is being tested in pipes between Barnsley and Penistone with expectations to connect over 8500 homes and businesses with ultra-fast broadband.
If the trial succeeds, this could be a key accelerator in bringing gigabit broadband to those who do not currently have access and move closer to the government’s Project Gigabit target. The trial is to proceed over the next 2 years and will see fibre-optic cables run through over 17km of drinking water pipes within the area.
