Trials in South Yorkshire to bring Full Fibre to rural communities

New trials are taking place in South Yorkshire to bring faster internet to those in rural areas by running fibre cables through water pipes.

The new government backed scheme is being tested in pipes between Barnsley and Penistone with expectations to connect over 8500 homes and businesses with ultra-fast broadband.

If the trial succeeds, this could be a key accelerator in bringing gigabit broadband to those who do not currently have access and move closer to the government’s Project Gigabit target. The trial is to proceed over the next 2 years and will see fibre-optic cables run through over 17km of drinking water pipes within the area.

Digital Infrastructure Minister Julia Lopez said:

“Digging up roads and land is one of the biggest obstacles to rolling out faster broadband, so we’re exploring how we can make use of the existing water network to accelerate deployment and help detect and minimise water leaks. We’re committed to getting homes and businesses across the country connected to better broadband and this cutting-edge project is an exciting example of the bold measures this government is leading on to level up communities with the very best digital connectivity.”

Project Gigabit

Gigabit broadband coverage has increased rapidly from 6% coverage in 2019 to 66% in 2021, with the figures exceeding targets every month. Currently the government’s target is to reach full coverage by 2030.

This collaborative project is being delivered by Yorkshire Water, Arcadis and the University of Strathclyde. The Fibre in Water scheme is thought to be a faster, more sustainable and cost effective way of powering the UK with new gigabit capable broadband.
